Venezuela has
been cheated
Brian Wilson, former Member of Parliament
and former Minister of Trade and Energy in
the United Kingdom, made reference to how large
oil corporations in Venezuela only wanted fast
profits, allowing gas to be wasted so as to
elude the investments that were necessary.

London (OPEV) - Former
Minister of Trade and Energy, Brian Wilson,
described the large oil companies in Venezuela
as cheating the nation. The declaration was
made to the Venezuelan Embassy’s
Press Office during the 5 July celebrations.
“I first went to Venezuela when I was
Trade and Energy Minister for the United Kingdom
and what struck me was that Venezuela which has
had oil for 80 years should have achieved so
much more for all the people of Venezuela”,
stated former British Member of Parliament and
actual President of the Scottish-Venezuelan society.
“That first visit was in the early years
of the Chavez government”, he continued. “I
noticed for instance that all the gas which was
being produced as by-product of oil was being
burned and that was a huge waste, an unbelievable
waste of the resources of Venezuela because all
of that could be turned into revenue” said
Wilson. “But of course the big oil companies
only wanted the quick gains of oil and not to
make the investment that was necessary” said
Wilson, who at present chairs the Scottish-Venezuelan
Association and recently travelled to Venezuela
as part of his work.
“From the first time that I visited Venezuela
I always thought that the people of that country
have been cheated out of a huge portion of the
oil, gas and wealth of their own country” he
said. “Eventually people realized that,
and they want to see something better and more
progressive being done with the wealth of their
country”, he indicated.
When asked about the
work carried out by the Venezuelan government
regarding this, he replied, “It
seems to me that what the current government
of Venezuela is trying to do, is to distribute
the wealth more fairly to achieve the health
and education programmes that were neglected
for so long” said Wilson.
“I really love my visits to Venezuela,
people are great, the direction the country is
taking is right”, he concluded
