The Independent supports the coup d’etat in Honduras.

British newspaper The Independent published an article on the 30th of June 2009 titled “Guns and Democracy”, which argues that “it is possible that the army might have actually done Honduran democracy a service.”

The editorial highlighted that Honduran institutions joined forces to stop Zelaya from calling a referendum that would have given him power to alter the constitution in order to extend the presidential term limit in that Central American country.

In relation to this editorial, Venezuelan Ambassador to the UK, Samuel Moncada, said that: “this is another example in which a British newspaper easily forgets the principles of democracy in Latin America.”

Moncada added: “According to The Independent, the army knows better than the people and brutal force is better than the rule of law. This is pure fascism”.

Ambassador Moncada immediately sent a letter to the editor of the independent responding to this colonialist position.
