Venezuela registers great progress on Millennium Goals
Caracas, Oct 08. ABN.- The 2009 report about the Venezuelan Millennium Goals registers the great progress made by the country, said this Thursday the Minister of People's Power for Planning and Development, Jorge Giordani.
One of the goals proposed by United Nations is to reduce by half the sum of people living in extreme poverty by 2015. During a joint press conference with the Minister of People's Power for Economy and Finances, Ali Rodriguez Araque, and the President of the Venezuelan Central Bank, Nelson Merentes, to announce the new economic measures the Government will carry out in the face of the world financial crisis, Giordani said that the country has made great progress in these goals, and some of them have been already achieved.
“Here we have the Venezuelan Millennium Goals, a report we handed over to the President, where it was agreed to reduce by half, by 2015, the sum of people living in extreme poverty.
We are doing it and many goals have been already achieved. It is not 2015 yet, but Venezuela has anticipated,” he pointed out.
Moreover, Giordani made emphasis on how Venezuela rose four positions at the Human Development Index report presented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), which is a prove an inclusive social policy carried out by the National Government as an essential economic tool.
Likewise, Venezuelan planning minister reminded that in 1999 inflation was 30%. This index has been controlled and lowered by the Government. In addition, the oil price is stable despite world's economic crisis.
“Based on these facts, there was a great investment to generate job posts, give a new boost to the economic growth and vindicate poorest ones.
The main goal is to use the financial system in favor of Venezuelans,” he stated.
